0 Indian developers can now sell paid apps in Google Play Store

Indian app developers have a reason to rejoice, as Google is now allowing Indian
developers to sell paid apps in the Google Play Store. Until now, they were only able
to distribute free applications via Play Store.
Paid apps will be another way to monetisation for Indian developers, who were until
stuck with advertisements as the sole source of revenue. Folks at Android Police were
first notice this change in “ Supported locations for merchants ” page of Google Play
for Developers help section.
Given the thriving developer community in the country, we can expect more cool
Android applications in the days to come.
To sell paid apps in the Google Play Store, developers will have to register as Google
Checkout merchants and then they will be able list paid apps in the Play Store.
However when we tried setting up a seller account in Google Checkout, it refused to
do that and gave the following error (the same was confirmed by others too).
We do not currently support seller accounts from this location. If you have an
existing Wallet account, please use the Wallet settings page to change your country
of residence.
Looking like Google still have to make it live, but that should not take much time. We
hope to see it working in next couple of days.

0 MTNL not to participate in 2G spectrum

MUMBAI: Telecom operator
MTNL today said it has no
plans to participate in the 2G
spectrum auction as it already
has the spectrum required to
carry out the business.
"We already have spectrum
and licence with us. We have
sufficient spectrum. So we will
not participate in the auction,"
MTNL chairman and
managing director AK Garg
told reporters on the sidelines
of an even here today.
Stating that the government-owned utility firm
was now focusing more on GSM services
network, broadband services and wired telecom
segment to expand its reach, he said that MTNL
is working on fiber-to-home project, under
which it aims to provide 15,000 ultra high-
speed broadband connections in Delhi and
Mumbai where it primarily operates.
"We want to expand and looking at 250 sites
(towers) each in Delhi and Mumbai. We have
already floated tenders and will decide on the
issue by December. This is to increase the speed
of 3G network," he said.
On the CDMA expansion, Garg said that the
company was awaiting government guidelines
on the issue.
He also said that the telecom entity is taking
several steps to curtail losses, reduce interest
burden and shore up revenue.
"We are taking steps such as surrendering BWA
license. trying to trim losses, reduce interest
burden. We are also leasing out spare space
with us which is expected to fetch Rs 100 crore
annually," he said.
The company had recently approached the DoT
for surrendering Broadband Wireless Access
(BWA) Spectrum in Delhi and Mumbai and for
refund of Rs 4533.97 crore for one time upfront
BWA Spectrum charges paid.
Besides, MTNL is also exploring options to
commercially exploit its land bank, he said
adding it is assessing the prospects of both
developing the land on its own or with some
private players.
On the company's capex plans, the MTNL chief
said that around Rs 300-400 crore have been
set aside for investment in FY 13.

0 Sprint Telecomm In India

The $32-billion US telecom major Sprint Nextel
Corporation is set to enter India by buying 74% stake in
a joint venture firm Sprint Telecom India floated with
BSE-listed software development company Persistent
Systems.
Sprint India will then provide STD, ISD and Internet
services with telephony along with advanced managed
network services to other telecom operators after it
obtains the neccessary licences from the department of
telecommunications. Sprint Nextel owns and operates
Sprint, the third largest wireless telecommunications
network in the US, with 51 million customers, behind
Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility. Sources said, Sprint
Nextel will buy 74% in Sprint India in two tranches
totaling to Rs 6.2 crore. The company has sought the
permission of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board
(FIPB).
For any foreign firm to operate in India’s telecom sector,
it needs to form a joint venture with a resident financial
partner who needs to own at least 26% stake in the
operating firm. And this is the reason Sprint Nextel has
formed Sprint Telecom India.
With this, Sprint joins the likes of Singtel, AT&T, Verizon,
BT, and Cable & Wireless that are active in India in the
enterprise communications space. Persistent generates
a quarter of its revenues from the telecom sector as a
bulk of its clients are telecom-specific software
providers and handset manufactureres.
According to sources, Sprint International’s investment
in Sprint India will be in two tranches. Sprint
International will first subscribe to 74% of the Sprint
India’s shares at face value. Persistent Systems will then
buy 26% in Sprint India. The JV entity Sprint Telecom
India will then obtain the neccessary licences from DoT
following which Sprint India will issue additional shares
(at a premium) to Sprint International totalling 74%. The
Sprint network operates a combination 2G and 3G
wireless network. In the US, Sprint’s data options
include Sprint TV, Sprint Radio Stations, Sprint Music
Store, Sprint On-Demand, unlimited web access, video
and picture mail, wireless chat and games.
Sprint also offers data packages including its expensive
Phone as Modem plan which allows customers to tether
their phone to a computer for use as a wireless modem.
Sprint also offers broadband for the home via Sprint
Mobile.

browsers. In tune with these changes, we are
pleased to launch our intuitive ‘my airtel’ app
that has been designed to empower our
customers and help them manage all their
airtel services, effortlessly. The app comes with
a smart layer of intelligence that will allow our
customers to discover, access and self-manage
a slew of services.”
The usual download charges, depending on the
subscriber's data connection, will apply for
downloading the application as well as
accessing the application. For non-airtel
Internet users, there will also be a one time
SMS charge for authentication to their
respective telecom operators.
It was recently reported that Airtel will also
deliver Microsoft’s cloud based Office 365
business productivity solutions to Small and
Medium Businesses by providing the service
through its cloud platform. Under the
agreement, Airtel will be able to power SMBs
with access to Microsoft Office 365, addressing
their connectivity and productivity
requirements while allowing them to focus on
their core business activities. Office 365, along
with Airtel’s DSL and Internet Leased Ports/
Lines (ILP) services, will empower SMBs with
the option to create a public facing website
with their own domain name and provide

0 RELIANCE 4G going Smart

Back in November, we'd reported that Reliance
Industries and DataWind are prepping an ultra
low-cost 4G tablet. The latest media reports
suggest the 4G tablet will be launched by 2012-
end at an expected price of Rs. 3,500. In addition,
the tablet will come with bundled plans as low as
Rs 10 per 1 GB of data.

It's notable that RIL is an exclusive pan-India(having license for all 22 circle) 4G
licence holder, having paid Rs. 13,000 crore for the
spectrum. RIL's 4G services will be based on
Qualcomm's Long Term Evolution (LTE)
technology. The LTE technology is presently in the
test phase and has only been implemented in
selected developed markets by major telecom operators such as Vodafone, Verizon and
Telenor. RIL's subsidised 4G-based tablets are certainly going to boost its 4G spectrum
services.
According to reports , RIL's services will be accessible from all devices. Apart from the tablet
PCs, there will be USB sticks and Wi-Fi modems, so that all kinds of users are able to access its
services. RIL's subsidised 4G services are likely to create a tough time for the existing 3G
service providers, who have reportedly paid similar amounts to get their licences. While RIL
shelled out Rs. 13,000 crore for a pan-India 4G licence, Bharti Airtel paid Rs. 12,295 crore for
spectrum in just 13 circles.
The data services at a subsidised rate of Rs. 10/GB is almost one tenth of the present 3G plans.
Airtel recently launched its Super 950 plan under which it was offering unlimited 3G data
services for a monthly rental of Rs. 950. The plan is presently available only for Rajasthan circle.
It's expected Airtel and other telecom operators may soon come up with similar unlimited
plans in other circles.
Other than the existing 3G rivals, RIL may face stiff competition from other CDMA operators
like Reliance Communications, Tata Communications and MTS. These CDMA telecom
operators have been offering their tariffs at lower prices. RCom has already forayed into the
tablet market with its Reliance 3G Tab .

0 Firefox OS Marketplace screenshots leaked

Mozilla has been showcasing its new mobile operating system Firefox OS (aka Boot to Gecko) since the Mobile World
Congress earlier this year. There've been very few details or leaks forthcoming, until now.
Tech blog Engadget has got hold of the screenshots showing the near final Firefox Marketplace. There seems to be
nothing extraordinary about the Marketplace as such; overall it features a simple design with Marketplace home
page featuring select apps in the upper half, and categories on the other half.
The app detail page features the usual app description, ratings, reviews, and other details you would expect. Other
pages in the Marketplace include account, downloaded apps and the about page.
A few key details still seem to be missing - how the paid apps ecosystem will work, which payment systems will be
in-place etc.
The first Firefox OS devices are due to arrive from European telecom operator Telefonica in 2013. We hope to see
more on the OS and its features before that.

0 Make a Green Phone Call – Tell India’s Biggest Operator to Switch Off Diesel and Go Renewable

Greenpeace is calling on the telecom industry to focus on managing its energy and carbon by substantially
shifting its power generation for network operations to renewable sources, and to proactively advocate for
economy-wide policies that combat climate change and increase the use of renewable energy.
Currently there are over 900 Million Indian people who use mobile phones. As this number increases, so
does the need for energy to power the mobile towers.
Mobile phones have become an integral part of our life. But when was the last time you sat back and thought
about all that goes behind powering your mobile phone and the network? This video will help you to
understand what goes behind the scene in every tower and how its impacting everyone.

0 Iphone 5 Leaked Video

As is always the case, the closer we get to an iPhone launch, the more leaks there are. Some attribute these
as purposely released by Apple generate more hype for their imminent launch.
Whatever the case, this latest video confirms what we've heard about the iPhone 5, and it might be the real
deal.
Speaking of leaks, a white version of the iPhone 5 was also leaked at the start of the month, this time by
Taiwanese popstar Jimmy Lin.
Lin posted on Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter and Facebook in one), that the new iPhone is indeed
longer but thinner than its predecessor, created of an aluminum alloy which makes it feel the same as the 4S
in hand. He also confirmed that it will use 19-pin connector rather than the current 30-pin one.
Of course, take both of these with the usual grain of salt.
Whether either of these proves false almost doesn't matter at this point, since Apple are set to officially
announce the new device on September 12th .

0 Mysterious HTC phone leaks

After posting a rather quiet IFA showcase, it appears that HTC has something major in the works for the
immediate future. A couple of blurry shots showing a mysterious handset made by the Taiwanese company
have leaked out.
The device in the photos looks a lot like a future flagship for the company. It sports a clean design, Beats
Audio livery and a red/black color scheme. Sadly, there's no info on its specifications. We can reasonably
expect that they will be nothing but top shelf though.
It's no secret that HTC has been going through tough times lately. A new halo device, which is executed right
can surely help the company turn its fortunes around. We'll certainly be keeping a close look on this one.

0 APPLE'S New HeadSet

Vietnamese website Tinhte.vn ( via MacRumors) has published a video and high quality images of what it claims to be redesigned
headphones for the new iPhone which is expected to be revealed soon. The site claims that the in-ear headphones came from a
Vietnamese Foxconn plant as cable labeling reads “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in Vietnam.” However, since the
validity of the claims can’t be verified, the site says that the build quality of the part has them convinced it is a legitimate Apple
product.
The “leaked” in-ear headphones seems to be a significant change from the current earphone models from Apple. This new design
seems to feature a teardrop shape and is supposedly more comfortable than the previous set supplied with the iPhone.
Apple is widely expected to announce the next-generation iPhone on September 12th.

0 Clean you Phone Now

Mobile phones are actually filthier than toilet seats because
they are never cleaned even after being handled by
different people, thus swarming with germs, say
researchers.
Tests showed that up to 10 times the amount of pathogens
which cause nausea and stomach upsets were present on a
mobile phone than a toilet seat.
Charles Gerba, professor of microbiology at the University
of Arizona, said during his ongoing experiments he has
found that bugs get onto a phone because it is so close to
our hands and mouths.
When somebody lets a friend or a stranger use their mobile their bacteria easily gets onto the device too.
Gerba added that because mobiles are electronic some people are reticent about cleaning. Since they are just not
part of our cleaning routine. But they should be wiped with an antibacterial substance every now and then.
Previous research has found that other things we assume are clean are in reality rather disgusting, the Daily Mail
reports.
British scientists discovered that cash machines have similar levels of pseudomonads and bacillus, bacteria which are
known to cause sickness and diarrhoea, as they found in public toilets.
Computer keyboards are also five times dirtier than the average lavatory seat.

0 Firefox OS First Look

Eventhough Leaked images of Firefox OS have
released earlier,Now we have official Images
from Mozilla. Our First Impression of Firefox OS
is that its a mix of both Android and iOS.
It is still a work in progress but the OS looks
visually attractive. The rounded icons seemed to
be inspired from Nokia Belle while the Home
Screen is clearly inspired from iOS.It has a
drop-down notification bar as well, just like
Android, along with system shortcut buttons we
find in Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on its Android
smartphones. Even the settings menu is similar
to Android.
But the differentation will be in hardware as we
expect Firefox OS to be less processor intensive
than Android.

0 Upcoming 2G Auction India

India's Supreme Court has again extended the
deadline for the government to conduct the
country's 2G spectrum auction to Jan. 11,
2013.
In a Hindustan Times report Monday, division
bench of justices GS Singhvi and KS
Radhakrishnan said the court will initiate
contempt proceedings if the government does
not complete the auction process by the
extended deadline, and "exemplary costs may
be imposed".
The new deadline is the third extension given by
the court which had ordered the government to
carry out a new round of auctions for 2G
airwaves, after it revoked all existing 122
licenses in February this year. The first deadline
was set for Jun. 2, and later pushed to Aug. 31
after pleas from India's Department of
Telecommunications (DoT).
The court also ruled carriers which licenses
were to be revoked on Sep. 7 can continue to
operate on their existing permits until Jan. 18
next year, the Hindustan Times reported. The
DoT also announced details of the rules for
participants in the impending 2G auction.
It said it will issue a notice on Sep. 28 inviting
applications and interested parties to submit
their applications by Oct. 19. The final list of
bidders will be announced Nov. 6.
A mock auction will be carried out on Nov. 7
and Nov. 8. The actual auction of the 1800MHz
band will commence Nov. 12, and the auction
for 800 MHz band will be held two days later,
the DoT said, adding that payment of successful
bids must be done within 10 days after the
respective auctions close.
